Role: Management Consultant – Big Data Exploitation
Location: Central London
Salary: £80,000 to £95,000 (based on experience)

We’re looking for a real expert in Big Data to join one of the World’s biggest names in telecoms and media. This isn’t your typical Data position though. As despite looking for someone who has experience within Big Data, we’re not looking for a practitioner. As this role is a consulting position, sitting between the firm’s technology division and the end users of the data. Understanding their business needs and advising them of the appropriate solutions to implement in order to achieve their objectives.

We need someone who really understands the different tools and uses – including:

  • Data architecture tools
  • Big data toolsets, including Hadoop, R, Python, Sqoop, MongoDB, Hive, etc.
  • Relational databases – Oracle, SQL, Golden Gate
  • Data management, discovery and governance tools – Collibra, Alex
  • Data virtualisation technologies – BlueData

Your remit will be to ensure the company has the data backbone in place to allow the flexibility and adaptability they need – not just for now, but for the future.

Understanding the future landscape of needs for the firm with its data, and establishing business cases around decision like:

  • Data lakes and their warehousing strategy.
  • How to make data available externally
  • Deciding the governance process and how to put it in place to enable this
  • What tech to use for replication of data

ABOUT THE ROLE

You’ll be working across the company’s community of data specialists and those who need access to it. Looking after their 3-5 year roadmap.

Considering the various use cases they’re looking to deliver, and understand where the potential limitation or pinch points might be. Then how you can support them by marrying your knowledge of the data eco-system (the various tools, their features and benefits), with the business challenges they’re looking to tackle.

This is best described as being a client-side management consulting position. Handling a large stream of projects all centred around continuously improving the company’s ability to commercial use data and do so appropriately.

WHERE THE ROLE SITS

The role sits between the company’s Technology division and the Data practitioner community. Identifying the opportunities to enhance what they’re able to do and the speed at which things can be delivered. Developing business cases and gaining approval for implementation of new tech based solutions. Then putting them onto the roadmap of the Technology division to be delivered.

CHALLENGE THINKING!

As part of your consulting process, you will need to dig into the needs of that Data stakeholder community. Understand if, what they think they need, they do. If not, you’ve got to be able to push back appropriately and challenge their ideas. Ensuring their thinking is robust and providing your own subject matter expertise to guide and advise accordingly.

Experience Required:

  • Solid breadth of knowledge and experience around the various tools used in data science, governance, discovery, architecture, management and engineering – such as Hadoop, R, Python, Scoop, Hive, Pig, SQL, DataRobot, MongoDB, Collibra, Alex & BlueData (you don’t need to know all of these, but it’s a role where someone who has a broad knowledge of the various tools across the ecosystem is needed)
  • Evidence of successfully influencing a firm’s data and technology roadmap. Providing recommendations on appropriate tools and solutions
  • Knowledge of automated analytics and self-service analytics programmes and platforms
  • Able to demonstrate the ability to connect the technology solution to the business problem it’s looking to solve
  • Previous within a data centric management consulting firm in this kind of space will be ideal
  • Experience of business case development and have experience of successfully influencing change within big businesses
  • Must have the necessary visas to live and work within the UK without restriction.
