Since 2001 we Pelicans have sought to provide a recruitment service based on three key ingredients – Honesty, Knowledge and Service.
It sounds simple and you’d wonder why everyone isn’t doing it, but in our experience (and that, it seems, of our candidates and clients) there are still so many recruitment businesses that are all about ‘doing the deal’ and our industry continues to be viewed in a negative light.
10 years on we are proud to have built a team of awesome consultants who live and breathe those same ideals we set out with. We are all absolutely committed to ensuring that every person that we have contact with enjoys a positive experience and comes away feeling they have been treated well, even if we weren’t able to help them fill, or find, a position.
But don’t be fooled into thinking that these niceties mean you can’t be hugely successful !
Our consultants earn highly competitive basic salaries with benefits, as well as uncapped commission and additional bonuses. They work in smart open plan town centre offices, dress down every day of the week and spend more time bantering and eating cake than is really good for them !
They are able to develop their desks as they choose, identifying their own client base and candidates and planning how they spend their time, with personalised KPIs attuned to their niche markets.
They are genuinely able to progress their skills and their careers with us, making use of a personal annual training budget and ongoing daily support from their colleagues and the directors.
Working here isn’t for everyone and we are pretty picky about who we take on:
You must demonstrate an absolute passion for offering an enhanced level of service, whilst also being driven to continually improve your skills through ongoing training and development.
You must show us your commitment to investing time in developing an industry leading network of relevant candidates is paramount, ensuring that you can truly supply the best of the best to your clients.
You must be genuinely self motivated and goal driven, with a desire to deeply understand the niche market you work in so you can offer your candidates the best opportunities for their career development.
Having no previous experience in recruitment doesn’t mean you can’t show us these traits, and we offer a graduate training scheme that gives you all the skills you need to succeed in this fantasically rewarding industry. Full training is given from day one for at least six months whilst you develop a candidate and client base to take on when you are ready to move into an Associate Consultant role. From there you can gain promotion to Consultant, Senior Consultant and Principal Consultant before deciding whether Team Manager is where you want to go next.
If you think you might have what it takes to be a Blue Pelican, please contact Gemma Skillett on 01892 507 120 or send your CV to email@example.com for an initial conversation.
If it sounds like we might be right for each other you will be invited in for the first of a two interview process.
But don’t just take my word for it – here’s what some of our consultants have to say about what its really like to work here:
I can’t ever see myself working for another recruitment business; the company is professional and focussed on success but not at the expense of its employees. The Directors have a clear and obvious commitment to us and I feel genuinely valued. I’d wholeheartedly recommend Blue Pelican as an employer.
Andrew Wise – Principal Consultant – Pharma
Having worked for a number of agencies previously recruiting for different industries I can sincerely say Blue Pelican is the best company I have ever worked for. From day one I was encouraged to develop my desk in the way I felt was best and encouraged and supported by the Directors. Each desk is different and every consultant works in a different way, there is not a Blue Pelican ‘way’. Although we are all hungry for success the environment is not the typically aggressive, competitive one you might imagine. I would highly recommend working for Blue Pelican for any recruiter at any level.
Andy Stevens – Consultant – Pharma
I joined Blue Pelican back in 2006 and what initially attracted me was the culture. It was one of professionalism and friendliness. You get a real sense of achievement from the work you do here. Although recruitment is often perceived as just being about sales, Blue Pelican aims to put the Consultancy back into this industry, going that step or two further for their customers, wherever possible.
It’s a collaborative but driven environment, with clear opportunities for personal development and career growth. Supported by a culture of continuous learning, including a commitment to training and development with some of the industries best recognised experts. In my time here I’ve been promoted 3 times, progressing from Consultant through to Managing Consultant, achieving this during periods of wider economic uncertainty.
As a consultant you’re treated as an adult, given the freedom to approach recruitment your way. So long as it’s ethical, professional and in line with industry best practice. Blue Pelican doesn’t employ micro-management techniques or blanket ‘one size fits all’ targets which don’t take into account industry variance. With individualised targets, they’re realistic and therefore encouraging, rather than used as something to hit you with.
Equally because we’re not a large corporate, if you have a good idea, it can be implemented and tested quickly and we’re always on the look out for good ideas. For example, we were one of the first adopters of LinkedIn and other social and professional networking tools, which are now widely utilised across the industry.
Colin Doree – Managing Consultant – Marketing
Having worked for two recruitment agencies prior to joining Blue Pelican Group, I can truly say, hand on heart, that they offer something different. The trust that is placed in me as an experienced consultant to run my own desk makes me feel ever confident and driven to succeed. It also allows me to work strategically as well as being commercially focused and there is always support if I need it.
Fundamentally, I genuinely feel I have a voice at Blue Pelican, which allows me to continuously develop and grow. Plus the job satisfaction I get from working for an ethical and professional recruitment agency such as Blue Pelican is invaluable – it’s the way I would do things if I were running my own company !
